Monday June 11, almost 20 volunteers planted 700 seaside little bluestem plants within the dunes adjacent to the Atlantic Beach skate park on the Peppertree Resort property. The plants are home to a very special butterfly called the crystal skipper, and is only found between Fort Macon State Park and Hammocks Beach State Park. The NC Aquariums have been working in collaboration with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, NC State University, and Michigan State University, to restore seaside little bluestem to areas of low density in order to provide more habitat for the skipper.
